The Importance of Regular Hearing Tests
Sep 23rd, 2008
Hearing loss can affect people of any age. Having regular hearing tests is important for everyone, but especially for very young children and the elderly.
Often, young children will not know how to explain the fact that they can’t hear everything, or won’t even be aware there’s a problem. If the hearing loss has been going on for a while, the child will be used to it and think it’s normal. If you take your child for yearly hearing tests the problem will be caught quickly and treatment options and hearing devices can be prescribed that will improve your child’s quality of life.
Older adults may not want to admit they have a problem. Admitting that their hearing is getting worse is just one more sign they are getting older. This is often hard for people to face. Family members should enforce the fact that an ear hearing aid offers more listening benefits than drawbacks. Being able to enjoy a movie or concert, hearing the laughter of grandchildren, and not listening to others complain the television is too loud, are all things that should be stressed as improvements hearing aids will bring.
Talking openly with older adults, and being responsible in caring for young children, is very important in families. Making sure everyone gets annual hearing tests and keeping an eye out for the signs of hearing loss is imperative.
