Pure Eating for a Pure Life

Oct 16th, 2009

YOR Health does not promote Rastafarianism or many of the associated perspectives and affiliations. But the central philosophy guiding the Rastafarian adherence to an Ital food diet – that what enters the body is of great significance – is very similar to what guides the YOR Health mission statement. What the Rastas call “soul food,” YOR Health might call “food intended for holistic wellness as supported by science.”

While the Western world may be relatively new to the concept of healthy eating – understanding that ingredients can promote or oppress holistic wellness – there are many examples of cultures with longstanding traditions of nutrition and how it contributes to general health and happiness. One of the most interesting examples is the Rastafarian reliance on “Ital food.” By examining the purpose and role of Ital food within the Rastafarian culture, one can begin to understand why YOR Health products exist and what sort of benefit they offer.

At root, Rastafarians believe that food is a way to be at one with nature and the world. It acts as medicine for the body, containing healing ingredients that help the body to operate in peace and efficiency. YOR Health embraces a similar philosophy, and clinical studies have suggested that the products do benefit those who use them.

The primary goal of maintaining an Ital diet is to increase the life energy that Rastas believe lives within each human being, as bestowed by Jah, or God. This energy is called Livity, and Rastas believe that it is shared between all living things.

Most of the Rastafarian dietary laws appear to be based on Jewish diet restrictions. It is of utmost importance to a Rastafarian that the wrong thing not be allowed to infiltrate and pollute the body, so much so that many Rastas will not cook in aluminum or metal pots, believing that trace elements of the metal may act as a contaminant. This is why most advocates of the faith-philosophy cook in clay pots. While YOR Health products do not need to be drank out of clay glasses, the advocates of YOR Health’s products are well aware that the right food and drink entering the body plays a significant role in general wellness.

Ital (derived from the word “vital”) food is also known as “soul food.” According to the dietary laws of the Rastafarian movement, food must be natural, pure and clean. This prescription manifests itself in several different ways. For example, most Rastafarians will not eat salt, chemicals, flesh or blood; they do not drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes. YOR Health products are made from pure and clean ingredients, and are rigorously tested to ensure throughout the growing and manufacturing processes.
