Getting the proper dosage of melatonin

Nov 2nd, 2009

One of the most important hormones in our body is melatonin. Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland during the night, and its task is to make us fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night. When daylight comes, melatonin production is stopped automatically by the pineal gland and that is when we wake up. It is only stimulated by the onset of darkness.

Over the past few decades, insomnia cases have risen to alarming levels worldwide. It is hypothesized that melatonin production of many people have been affected by working late nights, the preponderance of artificial lighting, and chemicals in food and water, which affect the pineal gland negatively.

Hence, the need for melatonin supplementation has arisen dramatically, even though not many countries approve melatonin for sale over the counter. If you do live in a country where you can purchase melatonin, you should take care not to overdose or underdose on melatonin, even though there are virtually no side effects to speak of, even after all these years of use by the public. Learn more about getting the proper dosage of melatonin right.
